Two weeks ago I asked for suggestions for how to surprise attack my kids with silly string on the last day of school. We have this crazy tradition that has been playing out for about 8 years now.

What we did:  I parked my car down the street so looked like I wasn’t home. Don was the decoy, pretending to work at his workbench in the garage. I hid in the back seat of his truck with the windows slightly down. You can tell that Katie was expecting something…

It worked! We laughed and laughed about it later. We reminisced about the antics over the years, like the time Don armed them with their own cans and they surprise attacked me instead. It’s a silly tradition (pun intended).

Our household can be fairly serious most of the time, but occasionally we do have a little fun.

Fun. It’s a word that sounds trite and immature.

How different would life be if we had more fun, especially during the times that traditionally should be serious? Take work, for example.

If you are worried that your colleagues won’t respect you if you make things fun, just pick up the book Nuts! by Kevin and Jackie Freiberg. They tell the story of Herb Kelleher and how he created a corporate culture of FUN when he founded Southwest Airlines.

Here are four hard-line benefits of maintaining a culture of FUN as described in Nuts!:

  • The most productive work force in the industry
  • Working for the fun of it
  • Low attrition and absenteeism
  • High creativity and innovation

Most workplaces have one or two people who love to infuse humor into the daily office routine. Why not be one of them? Find small ways to bring some smiles to yourself and others. Just think of the fun you could have with post it notes. Or what about this idea?
